Parkwood Springs, a 30.5-hectare former landfill in Sheffield, embodies centuries of industrial, social, and ecological change. This project reframes the site through the “Fifth Ecology,” positioning post-industrial land not as a scar to be concealed but as fertile ground for renewal. Central is olfaction: the overlooked dimension of smell, carried by soil, vegetation, weather, and residual materials, becomes a tool for interpreting history and shaping identity.

The masterplan integrates wind, topography, and planting to choreograph dynamic smellscapes across meadows, woodlands, and gardens. Odours are no longer incidental traces but active agents of memory, education, and community experience. Former waste zones are reimagined as a recycling garden and learning landscapes where industrial heritage is acknowledged, not erased.

Through ecological succession, native planting, and seasonal olfactory design, the project transforms Parkwood Springs into a living laboratory of industrial renewal. It shows how sensory engagement can enrich public landscapes, turning a post-industrial site into an inclusive, resilient, multisensory environment where ecology, heritage, and community meet.

Bio
I am a landscape architecture student passionate about the ways landscapes can shape cultural identity, ecological resilience, and community wellbeing. My particular interests lie in the study and design of planting, the preservation and interpretation of heritage, and the urgent challenges posed by climate change. I approach design as both a creative and research-driven practice, seeking to balance aesthetic expression with ecological and cultural sensitivity. Through my work, I aim to explore how landscapes can honor history, nurture biodiversity, and provide sustainable solutions for the fu
