Atal Sarovar transforms a neglected waterbody into a dynamic, multifunctional urban lake through water-sensitive design, ecological integration & inclusive public space planning. The lake was deepened, embankments sculpted & a vibrant recreational realm added with theme parks & organic trails. Balancing organic contours with geometric precision, the design enhances visual harmony & material tactility. An interconnected water network links all three city lakes, with overflow directed into a canal & discharged into a dam. Innovatively reusing tertiary-treated water from a STP, the lake ensures year-round water presence without burdening natural sources. Engineered for 100-year flood resilience, it features jogging tracks, shaded seating & cultural nodes. Bioretention cells, native vegetation & permeable pavements restore biodiversity while improving water quality & recharge. Designed for inclusivity, accessibility & community engagement, its blue-green non-motorized network promotes low-impact mobility & ecological continuity. This replicable model of integrated urban hydrology, ecological design & human-centric placemaking has enriched Rajkot's identity & catalysed investments.
