Sauska Tokaj Winery is located in the UNESCO-protected wine region of Tokaj-Hegyalja, Hungary. The project aimed to create a striking, modern winery primarily focused on fresh, dry white wines and champagnes, while also incorporating spaces for hospitality and gastronomy. Situated in the hilly area around the key settlements of the wine region, the building seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.
The architectural concept envisioned the structure as a gentle form floating above the landscape. At the top of Padi Hill, two 36-meter-diameter lenses house the bar and the restaurant of the winery. This is the only part of the building visible above ground level. The visitor entrance and lobby are located behind the lenses hidden in the hillside. The winemaking areas are located on the basement level, with fermentation rooms placed in circular spaces beneath the lenses. Steel tanks are arranged in concentric circles, surrounding a central wooden barrel aging area. A tunnel connecting to the cellar ensures efficient grape transportation and shipment of finished goods.
