This project forms part of a protective tourism development for a centuries-old Ming and Qing dynasty village in China. Departing from traditional hotel typologies, it innovatively adopts ten groups of courtyard-style guesthouses as its main structure, which also inspired the project’s name.
From planning through construction, the design team has continuously explored the relationship between nature, the ancient village, and new architecture: how can humans and the environment coexist sustainably?
While fully preserving the local mountains, forests, farmland, and village fabric, the project renews some abandoned buildings, allowing the new architecture to seamlessly integrate into the original village pattern, thus continuing history while presenting a fresh face.
Throughout the courtyards, streets, and interiors, natural landscapes are harmoniously introduced into all parts of the buildings. Meanwhile, a dialogue unfolds between new constructions and restored heritage structures, inviting visitors to constantly reflect on the symbiotic relationship among humans, nature, architecture, and time.
