Lighthouse is the first redeveloped building of the former Telegraaf complex in Amsterdam Sloterdijk, marking the first step of District West’s transformation. Strategically located near the highway and train station, the area is set to undergo a large-scale redevelopment in the coming years. The existing high-rise has been expanded into a modern 15,700 m² office, with a four-story addition and a new entrance. A key feature is its entirely wooden structure, enhancing both sustainability and a warm atmosphere.
The design blends the robust, industrial character of the original building with a welcoming interior, using wood and abundant daylight. A transparent atrium and sculptural staircase create openness, movement, and opportunities for spontaneous encounters. Sustainability is central to the design. The extension is fully demountable, built with reusable materials. A thermal energy storage system and smart climate control reduce energy demand, while green roofs and terraces promote biodiversity.
With Lighthouse, District West takes a step toward becoming a vibrant urban district with sustainable buildings, green public spaces, and a high-quality working environment.
