This 600+ homes community was merged from 3 aggravated hollowed villages. The design focused on preserving the collective lifestyle for the elderly population and keeping a low construction budget.
For traditional lifestyle, large private backyard for storage and gathering space for neighborhood interaction are important. In the outcome, housing orientation follows organic village context; clustered housing forms plazas in variety sizes, which can serve as community venues, creating various possibilities of traditional street life for neighbors; also, the backyard in each household serves as private space for veggie garden and food drying.
The housing style inspired by traditional Jiangsu architecture, with layered white gable wall and dark roof tiles. Because if the limit construction budget, the traditional details was simplified, complicated décor replaced by contrast color-coated module, the beauty of hipped and gable roofing outline remained but roof tiles got standardized.
This project aims to improve the rural residents’ wellbeing as well as the new rural community’s outlook.
