TRUNK(HOUSE) is the second hospitality concept of TRUNK in Tokyo, opened in August 2019 in the picturesque district of Kagurazaka.
The ambition was to revive the spirit of Yamaji, a former Geisha training house and ryotei (traditional Japanese gastronomic restaurant), by turning the place into a unique town house style hotel.
The design team took the decision to preserve the facade of the 70-year-old two-story building, to transmit to all the visitors, the heritage of this former Geisha and refined entertainment district. In contrast, the interior has totally been reshaped, yet always with this subtle sense of Japanese aesthetics. The partitions have been removed in order to create a dynamic between the different spaces, from the open kitchen to the dining room or the master bedroom and traditional cha-no-ma style living room. Materials such as wood, concrete mortar or oxidized steel walls and designers' furniture have been selected to magnify soberly the atmosphere which is intentionally disrupted by unexpected elements; a contemporary Ukiyo-e on the bathroom wall or stained-glass, or cherry on top, hidden behind a black door, a minimalist dazzling disco to end the night.
